10-Minute Beginner Latin Dance Workout: Fun, Low-Impact Cardio at Home

Watch the full workout video above and follow along at your own pace.

Looking for a beginner Latin dance workout that feels less like exercise and more like a dance party?

This 10-minute beginner Latin dance workout combines easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired dance moves with low-impact cardio to help you get moving, raise your heart rate, and have fun, right at home.

And you don't need to be a dancer to join us!

I'll be doing the workout standing, while Mom demonstrates a seated option from a chair. You can follow either one of us, or switch between standing and seated whenever you need to.

The goal isn't perfect choreography. It's simply to keep moving, enjoy the music, and have fun.

Why Try a Beginner Latin Dance Workout?

Dance is a wonderful way to add cardiovascular movement to your day without doing a traditional workout.

In this 10-minute routine, we'll use simple, repetitive movements inspired by Latin dance while keeping the workout approachable for beginners.

You can expect movements such as side steps, marches, heel taps, easy forward-and-back steps, arm movements, and plenty of opportunities to add your own personality.

Because the choreography is intentionally simple, you don't have to spend the entire workout worrying about which foot goes where.

If you miss a step, keep moving.

If you're going in the opposite direction from Mom and me, keep moving.

And if you decide to add your own dance move, that's perfectly fine too!

Movement matters more than perfection.

A Low-Impact Latin Dance Workout for Beginners

One of my favorite things about this workout is that you can adjust it to your own fitness level.

I'll demonstrate the standing movements without jumping, making this a low-impact cardio workout that's easier on the joints than many traditional dance workouts.

Mom will demonstrate the workout seated, so you can still enjoy the music and cardio movement if standing for the entire workout isn't comfortable for you.

The chair option can also be helpful if you're working on your endurance. You might begin the workout standing and sit down when you need a break, or start seated and stand for a song if you're comfortable doing so.

There is no requirement to choose one version and stick with it.

Choose the movement that works for you today.

Can You Get a Good Cardio Workout in a Chair?

Seated exercise doesn't have to mean sitting still.

By combining rhythmic leg movements with larger arm movements, you can turn a chair workout into an energetic whole-body movement session.

Mom will be moving her feet, legs, arms, shoulders, and upper body along with the music while seated.

The important thing is to work at your own comfortable pace. You don't need to match our speed or range of motion.

If you need to make a movement smaller or slower, do it.

And if you're feeling great and want to add a little more energy, you can make the movements bigger.

Depending on your body weight and how vigorously you move, you may burn approximately 40 to 80 calories during this 10-minute dance workout.

What You'll Need for This 10-Minute Dance Workout

You don't need any exercise equipment.

All you need is:

  • Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely
  • Supportive shoes appropriate for your exercise surface
  • Some open space
  • A sturdy chair without wheels if you're following Mom or want support nearby
  • A willingness to have some fun!

If you're doing the standing version and balance is a concern, keep a sturdy chair or counter nearby for additional support.

What to Expect During the Workout

We'll start gently so you have time to get comfortable with the rhythm and movements.

As the music picks up, we'll gradually increase the energy while keeping the choreography beginner friendly and low impact.

You'll see some movements more than once. That's intentional.

Rather than constantly giving you new choreography to memorize, I want you to have an opportunity to learn the movements and then enjoy doing them.

By the time we reach our final song, you may be surprised by how many dance steps you've already learned!

We'll gradually make our movements smaller toward the end of the workout so we can bring the intensity down and finish with a gentle cooldown.

The Benefits of Dance Cardio as We Get Older

Finding physical activities you genuinely enjoy can make it easier to keep movement a regular part of your life.

A beginner dance workout combines several elements of fitness at the same time.

You're moving continuously for cardiovascular exercise while coordinating your arms and legs, changing directions, shifting your weight, and responding to the rhythm of the music.

For older adults in particular, those different movement challenges can make dance a fun addition to a well-rounded fitness routine.

But there's another benefit that shouldn't be overlooked:

Dance can make movement joyful.

Exercise doesn't always need to involve counting repetitions or watching a timer.

Sometimes you can turn on some music and simply move.

And those minutes count too.

Is This Latin Dance Workout for Seniors?

Absolutely, but it's not only for seniors.

We designed this workout for beginners, older adults, people returning to exercise, and anyone looking for a short, fun, low-impact cardio workout at home.

That's one reason Mom and I love showing two different options.

You may prefer my standing version.

You may prefer Mom's seated version.

Or your workout may be somewhere in between.

What matters is finding a way to move that feels right for you.

How Often Can I Do a 10-Minute Dance Workout?

A short workout can be an easy way to add more movement to your day.

You can do this workout on its own when you only have 10 minutes, use it as a fun cardio session between other workouts, or pair it with one of our strength, balance, mobility, or stretching routines.

And don't underestimate a short workout simply because it's only 10 minutes.

Building a consistent exercise habit doesn't always require long workouts. Sometimes having something short, approachable, and enjoyable makes it much easier to say yes to moving today.
