What I Learned in Japan About Staying Active: Radio Taiso
Have you ever stumbled upon something so simple, yet so powerful, that it completely changes how you see movement and aging? That’s exactly what happened to me in Japan.
While traveling through Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo, I kept noticing groups of people—mostly seniors—gathering early in the morning, standing in parks or near historical landmarks, moving in perfect unison to the sound of gentle music. Their movements were graceful, rhythmic, and joyful.
What I had discovered was Radio Taiso—Japan’s beloved morning exercise routine.
What Is Radio Taiso?
Radio Taiso (also called Rajio Taisō or radio calisthenics) has been a part of Japanese life since 1928. It’s a short, structured routine—just around 3 minutes—broadcast on national radio and television each morning. It was originally introduced to encourage public health, and today, it’s a beautiful example of how a nation has made movement a part of everyday life.
It’s practiced everywhere: in parks, schools, office buildings, and even temples. Anyone can join in—children, office workers, and especially seniors.
As a fitness trainer who specializes in helping seniors stay strong, mobile, and independent, I instantly connected with the values behind Radio Taiso. It’s:
Gentle on the joints
Easy to follow
Designed to move all major muscle groups
And most importantly—it brings people together.
During my trip, I joined Radio Taiso sessions in all three cities and had the chance to interview a few locals. When I asked why they do it, the answers were simple and heartfelt:
"It keeps me healthy."
"I’ve done it since I was a child."
"It helps me stay mobile."
Those short answers said everything. This wasn’t just about stretching—it was about connection, routine, and aging with purpose.
Experts note that Radio Taiso is an excellent form of movement for older adult, supporting mobility, flexibility, coordination, which can help reduce the risk of falls. Just as important, it encourages daily consistency and social interaction, both of which are essential for long-term health. (Read a research report here.)
Imagine that—a free, 3-minute routine practiced every day that improves your body and lifts your spirit.
You don’t have to travel to Japan to experience the benefits of Radio Taiso. You can start right where you are.
I created a short video to share this experience—complete with my journey, interviews with locals and footage from beautiful locations in Japan.

👟 Then join my mom and me in a full follow-along Radio Taiso session that will post at 6am PT, tomorrow Tuesday, April 8th!
This trip reminded me that you don’t need fancy equipment or complicated routines to stay active. Sometimes all it takes is a song, a few stretches, and a community—whether in a park in Tokyo or your living room at home.
If you’re looking for a gentle, joyful way to stay active, I hope you’ll give Radio Taiso a try.
Let’s keep moving—together.
